10 Things I Hate About You was the perfect teen rom com. It came out in 1999. Set in an American highschool, it told the story of Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a new student, who falls in love with Bianca (Larisa Oleynik), but in order to get her father’s permission to date her, he tries to find a boyfriend for her older, and very ill-tempered sister, Kat (Julia Stiles). Enter bad boy Patrick (Heath Ledger).
Yes, we all know the how the story goes. But did you know that it was so successful that an attempt was made to turn in into a TV series? Sadly, it didn’t live up to the expectations. What else didn’t you know about this wonderful film? Find out in this list, courtesy of Diply.
1. Kat and Patrick dated in real life too
Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger started dating during filming. Unfortunately, it didn’t last long as they broke up only a year later.
2. The poem scene
One of the best scenes from the movie came near the end and it was when Kat read her poem “10 Things I Hate About You.“ It was done in only one take! And the tears were improvised!

3. A misnomer
The poem isn’t accurately named, because it lists fourteen things instead of ten!

4. Pardon my French
Cameron learns French to be able to tutor Bianca in the movie, but Joseph Gordon-Levitt can actually speak fluent French.

5. The serenade scene
One of the most iconic scenes was when Patrick, Heath Ledger’s character, sang Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” to Kat on the soccer field. We have Julia to thank for it, because it was her idea.

6. A role swap
Initially, Julia auditioned for the role of Bianca, and Larisa for Kat. That would’ve never worked, right?
7. Seems lists are the theme
In the library scene with Kat and Patrick there is a book called 10 Stupid Things Women Do To Mess Up Their Lives.
8. A darker undertone
Originally, the script was much darker. In the first draft, Mandella, Kat’s best friend, openly talked about her attempts to commit suicide so that she could join William Shakespeare.

9. The shrew
When Kat almost hits Michael, he calls her “the shrew.” This is one of many references to The Taming of the Shrew, the Shakespeare play on which the movie was based.
10. Drunk dancing
That party scene where Kat is drunk and dancing on the table is the reason she got cast in Save the Last Dance in 2001.

11. Payment for services rendered
We can see Patrcik paying off a student in the hallway. But did you notice that the student was actually the leader of the matching band who later helped Patrick with the serenade?
