The selfie is one of the most intriguing and controversial phenomena of our age. Keeping all of your social media followers informed about all of your daily activities has become a vital part of most people’s everyday life, and there is no better way to do that than with a well-executed selfie.
With smartphones, taking pictures should be a piece of cake, right? Still, some people are better at it than others, and it’s not all down to camera quality: some basic photography skills are in order, too. A true photographer can see beauty where others can’t, they know exactly how to position the subject, which angle to choose, and what lighting to use in order to create a masterpiece.
While this is all well and good when it comes to professional photography, it’s not what we really need on a daily basis. The most important thing you need to learn to significantly improve the quality of your selfie game is the art of posing properly. Luckily, Providr has a few tips that will help you immeasurably in this respect.
1. Stick out your chin
You may feel slightly awkward doing this at first, but it’s of paramount importance. Have you noticed how in some photos it seems like you have a double chin, even if you don’t have one in real life? That’s because you tilt your head downwards while having your picture taken. This is a very natural reaction of course, but if you try and stick your chin out a little instead, it will make a huge difference.
2. Hug your waist
If one of your signature poses is hands on hips, you may want to consider making a small change. Placing your hands on your hips can sometimes push your belly forwards, and you end up looking larger than you are. Try hugging your waist so that it appears curvier and you will instantly look much slimmer!
3. Hide those hips
Watch the placement of your hips! If you stick them out in the direction of the camera they will appear larger. If you don’t want this optical illusion ruining your photo, turn your hips away from the camera, and you will look significantly better.
4. Lift your arms
Don’t let your arms just hang at your sides: they look larger that way. Instead lift your arm slightly and point it away from your body. Yes, again, it’s a bit awkward but totally worth it.
5. Elongate your neck
Don’t slouch! It makes you look somewhat lumpy and sunken. You will look infinitely better if you elongate your neck. Just try aiming your body in a different way, or look slightly up for the best results.
6. Tilt your body
There is yet another way to make yourself appear slimmer: tilt your body into an ‘S’ shape using your arms and legs. This will make you look curvier and your waist smaller.
7. Get the camera above you
Well, it doesn’t always have to be a selfie, anyway. A regular photo taken by a friend will do the job just fine. And getting the camera above your body will always result in the best pictures because it is the perfect angle from which all of your features appear slimmer.
