The American actor and film producer, Tom Selleck is known for his acting chops and majestic moustache but there is much more about the man with the “stache” and you’re about to find it all out.
In Hollywood we face new breakups and divorces every day, Tom Selleck is standing strong and deeply in love with his 30 year old marriage with Jillie Mack. Behind the scenes the 72-year-old is a devoted father, a loving husband and a man of God. Even after all these years of being married, he opens up with a statement that we all have been suspecting.
For the people who don’t know, he was born in 1945 in Detroit, Michigan and soon after his birth the Selleck brood headed to California. That’s where they started a new life and Tom was great at almost everything that he tried. From modeling to basketball and academics, he nailed it.
He had good grades in high school and after graduation he was asked to join the University of Southern California (USC) basketball team. Even though he had amazing skills for basketball, he seemed more interested in acting and theater.
He started getting roles in several series and local commercials, he also starred on the popular TV show “The Dating Game.” He signed a contract with Twentieth Century Fox but he had other plans. He was drafted into the United States Army and served there from 1967 until 1973.
“I am a veteran, I’m proud of it. I was a sergeant in the U.S. Army infantry, National Guard, Vietnam era. We’re all brothers and sisters in that sense.”
After finishing his service, he came back to Twentieth Century Fox only to find out that he had been fired.
But his career was not going to stop there. He starred in six different TV pilots and struck gold with “Magnum, P.I.” a show about a veteran that uses his military skill to be a private investigator in Hawaii. It was surely the dream job that Tom had been waiting for.
The show took off after a few speed bumps including a funding drought and a writer’s strike. Tom earned an Emmy for “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series” in 1984.
When”Magnum, P.I.” after 162 episodes came to an end, he got other roles in “Friends,” “The Closer,” “Las Vegas,” and “Blue Bloods.” Through all of his successful films, TV shows he managed to project a strong sense of ethics like living his life through the word of God.
“I try very hard to conduct myself in an ethical way, because that’s important to my stability now. We’re a culture that’s so centered on the individual. The culture says that basically nothing is more important than the way you feel.
We’re living in an age that celebrates unchecked impulses. I work with exceptional kids, gang kids, deprived kids, enriched kids and they all have an astounding sense of entitlement. They don’t celebrate earning the privilege of driving at 16. They expect a car. There’s a big difference.”
Tom married his longtime love Jillie in 1987 during a secret ceremony. Only one year later they welcomed their only child Hannah Margaret.
He told NY Daily News about their relationship these days.
“Jillie and I have a pretty good partnership. We don’t do anything or make any decisions without consulting each other. And if one of us makes a decision involving Hannah, the other parent completely supports that position, even if you disagree.”
The rich family also knows the meaning of had-earned dollars. They share a modest California ranch and a working avocado farm. It is more than clear that extravagance isn’t really Tom’s style!
30 years after being married he knows that his life with Jillie is the most important thing. He also made clear what his priorities are with PEOPLE.
“It’s important to nurture your marriage. I think wanting time away from work has been good for that.”
