In a time when working out is looked upon extremely favorably, to find jogging or going to the gym uninspiring is seen as an eccentric stance. But there are people who simply don’t find those activities enjoyable, but would still like to improve their health and fitness. Is there an alternative? There is, indeed, and it’s the simplest exercise activity in the book: walking.
As a sole workout activity, or in addition to your regular regimen, walking is a natural, fun, healthy way of improving one’s stamina and losing weight. It puts you in touch with nature, it familiarizes you with your city and the people who live in it. It is also a great way to lose those first few pounds before you can begin with more demanding training, instead of being thrown in at the deep end before being ready and giving up before too long.

In terms of calories burned, this is how things stand: 3500 calories roughly equate to one pound of fat
One mile roughly translates to 2000 steps
Walking 2000 steps will burn about 100 calories
If you’re looking to lose one pound a week, you would want to walk about 10,000 steps per day or about 5 miles
There is a catch, though: that ratio only works if your weight stays the same – in other words, if you’re eating just enough to retain your weight without shedding or gaining
That is why a good diet is crucial if you want to lose weight by walking
A Stanford study found that walking improves creativity and in Ancient Greece, Aristoteles always used to walk with his students in order to stimulate their creativity
If you’re still not convinced, think about how little effort it takes to go for a walk compared to the benefits you’ll gain from it
And hey, even if nothing radical happens in terms of appearance, you still will have done a great favor to your long-term health!
