You know that icky, yellowish tint your teeth occasionally get? Eeewww. We all know it too well, and it’s called plaque. It is basically colorless, but as it accumulates more and more bacteria, it becomes this thin sticky film over your teeth.
While not immediately dangerous, plaque can harden and eventually turn into what’s called tartar – a sort of hardened plaque of a brown-yellowish tint. If left untreated, this can lead to inflammation of the gums, also called gingivitis.
And everyone agrees that’s bad. Luckily, Talkchick seems to have found an easy, natural remedy that removes plaque, and will, in turn, leave your mouth healthy, safe and pleasant.
Baking soda toothpaste
The Journal of Clinical Dentistry, which analyzed 5 clinical studies, published a study back in 2008 comparing plaque-eliminating products with baking soda powder. The study found that using baking soda was much more efficient in regards to eliminating plaque than the rest of the products, none of which contained baking soda.
However there was one caveat: if used in excessive amounts, the baking soda paste (or powder) could cause damage to your enamel, so moderation is advised.
Here’s a recipe for a home-made paste designed to remove plaque:
- 2 tablespoons of coconut oil
- 2 tablespoons of baking soda
- A few drops of essential oil (your personal preference)
Place all the ingredients in a bowl, and mix them until you get a homogenous paste. If you prefer, you can even add several drops of essential oil into the mix. At this point, the toothpaste is done, and you can freely put some on your toothbrush and get to brushing your teeth. It is important to brush the side areas of the teeth and try to brush most of the hard-to-reach corners, too. If the paste doesn’t generate a lot of foam, don’t worry, that’s normal. You should brush for 5 minutes at least. After you’re done, just rinse off with water.
What makes this paste efficient is the lauric acid, which is found in coconut and coconut oil. It’s a fatty acid that has strong antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. This is especially useful in fighting off plaque and the assorted mouth bacteria. With this natural, home-made toothpaste, your breath will remain fresh and your teeth will whiten.
