Almost every child wishes their parents were famous singers or actors rather than accountants or clerks. They believe that being a child of famous parents has a lot of advantages. That is true, but we need to remember that not everything is so bright. You might be born in a life that a lot of people would be jealous of, or you might be surrounded by creative people and learn a lot, but there are also negative things to this. Just imagine the pressure you will feel to be as successful as your parents.
Have you ever wondered how it would be if Will Smith was your dad? You can meet other celebrities, walk the red carpet and the fact that his net worth is $230 million will only make your life better. However, according to The Fresh Prince of Bel‑Air star’s daughter, Willow Smith – to grow up in the spotlight is “excruciatingly terrible”.
The 17-year-old Willow Smith told Girl Gaze, what it is really like to be the child of an A-list celebrity, and it not all milk and honey as you may believe.
“I’m going to be completely and utterly honest, it’s absolutely terrible,” The Why Don’t You Cry singer was candid about how it felt to be so famous, so young. She is the only daughter of 49-year-old actor Will Smith and actress Jada Pinkett-Smith.
“Growing up and trying to figure out your life… while people feel like they have some sort of entitlement to know what’s going on is absolutely, excruciatingly terrible – and the only way to get over it is to go into it.”
“Go into it” is what the California-born girl did. She got a role in the movie I Am Legend where her father played the main character Dr. Robert Neville. After that the 17-year-old released the platinum-certified song Whip My Hair.
“When you’re born into it, there are two choices that you have; I’m either going to try to go into it completely and help from the inside, or… no one is going to know where I am… and I’m really going to take myself completely out of the eye of society. There’s really no in-between.”
“You can’t change your face. You can’t change your parents. You can’t change any of those things. So I feel like most kids like me end up going down a spiral of depression, and the world is sitting there looking at them through their phones; laughing and making jokes and making memes at the crippling effect that this lifestyle has on the psyche”
You might wonder why Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s daughter is so negative about the industry she is working in. Apparently, it wasn’t always her choice. In an interview as part of Jay-Z’s album 4:44, Will Smith was honest about pressuring Willow too much, to tour her song Whip My Hair even when she didn’t want to. That moment was when Willow decided to take care of things her way.
“We came downstairs and she had shaved her head bald. She shaved her head bald in the middle of her Whip My Hair tour. I was like, ‘Oh, shit’,” The Pursuit of Happiness actor recalled.
“I’m looking at that girl and I’m like, ‘Got it. I understand. You will not have this trouble out of me ever again. Let’s go, baby. We can go’ … I wasn’t paying any attention whatsoever to what was going on emotionally with this beautiful little creature in front of me”
However, Willow Smith still appreciates the things she has.
“I have everything that I could possibly imagine. I have a family that loves me and that’s… more than most kids have. And it’s really awesome for me to experience this life… because most kids don’t have this life,” the youngster once said. “If I had to change one thing about my life, it would probably be, I wouldn’t be famous. Because when you’re famous, it’s so hard.”
Willow has a 19-year-old brother, Jaden Smith, who on the other hand looks like is loving being in the spotlight. The Karate Kid recently moved into his own $4 million mansion where he has apparently caused mayhem with his neighbors, including the Kardashians.
“He has a sense of entitlement, bravado. He doesn’t care if security reprimands him or gives him a warning, he just continues to do whatever he pleases,” said one neighbor.
