If you don’t believe in incredible love stories, maybe you will change your mind after reading this incredible story. Romance blossomed on a backpacking trip around Australia for a 38-year-old woman named Kat and a 77-year-old man named Kevin. The woman, who believed she was infertile, eventually married the man and had a baby with him! That’s not all. Their 39-year gap doesn’t stop them from being ‘incredibly happy’.
These two met in January 2007, at a campsite in Tasmania, when they were traveling together. Kat began her backpacking adventure in 2006, when she left native Germany and went to Australia. She said:
‘We were just friends, and I would stay in his nice caravan in return for cooking for him. While we shared his double bed, there was no funny business. But, one day in summer 2007, in a supermarket, he bumped into me by accident and I reacted furiously and stormed off – threatening to leave him and travel alone. After a row, we kissed and made-up and, shortly afterward, became a couple.’
Only a few months later, in August 2007, Kevin proposed to her with a silver ring. Kat said yes, despite his age.
Kat thought their age gap is 29 years, but she was shocked to find out the gap is 39 years on the day before their November wedding.
Kevin had lied to her.
‘He told me the truth – that he was 39 years older than me. He’d shaved 10 years off,’ she laughed. ‘But by that point, it was too late. There was no point in getting annoyed as I was in love.’
However, she was in love and couldn’t go any step back. Kat’s mother, Carla Hoffman, was shocked to find out about their relationship.
‘She understood when I told her how much I loved him,’ explained Kat. ‘Other people weren’t so positive, though. They thought he was too old for me, especially as he had been mistaken for my grandad.’
The pair married in Debbie’s garden in Tasmania. The happy couple and Kat’s mom were the only ones who knew that they were getting married. After the wedding, they moved permanently to Tasmania. Kevin had a stroke back in 2008. Fortunately, he recovered quickly.
Kat went to the doctor’s to investigate her unexplained infertility when something unexpected happened.
She discovered she was pregnant!
We were sort of trying for a baby,’ she explained. ‘We thought, ‘If it happens, it happens. But when it didn’t, I realised I really wanted it to. That’s why – after more than a year of trying – I was at the doctor. We were both absolutely thrilled when I found out I was pregnant – even more so when Pierre was born on September 10, weighing a healthy 7lb 4oz.’
In September 2010, baby Pierre, now seven, was born.
Unfortunately, Kevin had to undergo an open heart surgery recently.
He had his dodgy heart valve replaced with a cow’s valve.
‘When the surgeon heard about me they joked with him, saying, ‘We made it extra strong, so you can live for a long while yet,” said Kat, who now cares both hor Kevin and their son.
‘I know my choices might seem strange to some people. But I’m proof that age is just a number and you’re never too old for love.’
Here is a story about a couple who were together for 77 years.
