Francesca Lara is a 31-year-old mother of two whose New Year’s resolution was to lose weight. In January 2017, the Texan began her weight-loss journey not only because of her resolution but also because of the miscarriage she suffered in late November 2016. “After that, I felt an extreme sense of guilt. I couldn’t help but think that the miscarriage was related to my size or health,” Francesca told POPSUGAR.
The mother-of-two remembers that she was he was hospitalized for most of the time during her second pregnancy. She felt guilty and scared because she was larger and older. “My mind just started racing with all the ways I was failing as a mother, all because of my size. Once I built up strength from the miscarriage, I started.”
The 31-year old used to weigh 368 pounds when she made the life-changing decision. She told her family that she will check in with them when it comes to her meals and her progress and that this time it will be different than before.
She said, “I’ll never forget that night my dad asked me what was my goal weight. I told him 199 pounds. He laughed! That hurt — not because he didn’t believe me, but because of how many times I failed at weight loss. I told myself, ‘This is it, Franie. You’re going to do this and you will prove yourself right!'”
Another thing that inspired Francesca to lose 140 pounds was that her doctor told her she was close to becoming diabetic. Also, her husband told her that she was even snoring and would stop breathing while sleeping. “With the new year, I wanted to get healthy,” she revealed.
When it comes to her diet, she started eating three meals and two snacks each day, with a sugar-free Jello thrown in for dessert. The hardest thing for her was controlling her portion sizes. “My biggest hurdle was learning proper portions,” she said. At the beginning, she was drinking protein shakes and snacks that she later swapped for three regular meals consisting of things like grilled chicken and one cup of veggies.
This type of diet resulted in Francesca losing about 15 to 20 pounds a month, but after that, it wasn’t as easy. So, she decided to focus on intermittent fasting and exchanged walking three miles five times a week with weight training and jogging.
The Texas-born is documenting her weight-journey on social media and her 7-year-old daughter was usually the one to take the pics. “I told her when I started that one day she would be able to hug me all the way around. The day that she was able to finally do it was an amazing day.”
One of Francesca’s victories was when her 5-year-old could wrap her arms around her entirely and hug her. And also, being able to ride the rides at the carnival with her kids. “I cried,” she recalled.
Like every other person who wants to lose weight, Francesca is aware the motivation is fleeting. For her sending, the photos to her family and later seeing how far she came is what helped her a lot. “I’ve come too far to stop now,” she says.
As for anyone else who is struggling to lose weight, Francesca’s advise is to set monthly goals — and then smash them!
The mother of two has lost 152 pounds so far, but her ultimate goal is 199.
One couple from Indiana also set on an incredible weight-loss journey thanks to their New Year’s resolution.
