I need to wash it, like, every couple of days, and it really does suck. So what would you say about a lady that hasn’t washed her hair in a whole FIVE YEARS?
Yeah, five whole years. Just the thought of it makes me shiver.
On this episode of The Doctors show, the guest Jackie, who is the subject in question, was expected to be a horrible oily mess, but her hair looked like it was washed just before she came out on stage.
The hosts were also expecting some foul odors, and while her hair certainly didn’t smell bathroom fresh, it wasn’t faint-inducing.
One of the panelists even ran over to smell Jackie’s hair. They stated that it does smell like “it hasn’t been washed.”, but the doctor said “it doesn’t smell like it hasn’t been washed in 5 years.”
While we’re on the subject of oily and unwashed hair, according to hairboutique.com, greasy hair can be caused by “Irregular hair washing, genetically predisposed to greasiness or not, may result in a greasy condition from oil buildup. Even hair that is predisposed to dryness may actually develop greasy roots from lack of washing.”
Anyway, in the video, Jackie explains why she decided to call it quits on using shampoo. “About 5 years ago I started to get interested in examining the products that I use on myself, I use on my family, and we use in our house. The average American woman puts 515 chemicals on herself in a single day.” Scary, huh?
After this statistic, and knowing what bad stuff chemicals can do, Jackie started to seek natural alternatives to normal healthcare.
She started off by substituting her shampoo for a baking soda-vinegar mixture, but she found that this didn’t do a good job of regulating the oil production in her scalp.
Nowadays, she just rinses her hair with water and applies baking soda to the scalp to control odors, if it’s ever needed.
Dr. Travis Stork is absolutely impressed by Jackie’s passion for all things natural. He says, “I love the idea of what you’re doing because shampoo didn’t exist 500 years ago. 515 chemicals didn’t exist 500 years ago.”
So, now that we know that this woman has the right idea, let’s see if skipping the shampoo is really healthier for you than the alternative.
Dr. Ava Shamban, a certified dermatologist, is given the task to carefully examine Jackie’s scalp. The skin doctor immediately backs Jackie’s practices. She explains, “Our skin is designed to naturally cleanse itself.”
And Dr. Ava Shamban certainly knows what she’s talking about. She makes regular appearances on this exact show, and she’s also well known as the skin maven from Extreme Makeover.
The 61-year-old also serves as Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the UCLA-Geffen School of Medicine, and she has also published a book called Heal Your Skin: The Breakthrough Plan For Renewal.
Also known as the ‘Skin Visionary’ and the do-it-all derm. So yeah, you probably can trust words coming out of Dr. Shamban’s mouth.
Moving on, Dr. Shamban then proceeds to analyze Jackie’s scalp with a ProScope. However, there seemed to be no redness or irritation.
In fact, the dermatologist is so impressed with Jackie’s hair compared to what she does to take care of it, that she even considered trying it on herself. How’s that for a doctor’s validation?
Dr. Shamban also suggests shampooing less frequently and brushing more often. Olive oil or coconut oil is also good for the scalp.
Interestingly, even though the show clearly states that Jackie hasn’t washed her hair for 5 years, the public disagrees.
Since she mentioned she rinses it with water before applying the baking soda, you could argue that she washes it but she just doesn’t shampoo it.
I’ll let you decide on that, but don’t start a flame war in the comments.
