A White Lie tells the story of Anita Hemmings and seems like Zendaya is going to play her in the film.
Yes, it’s true guys. Zendaya will definitely portray Anita Hemmings that passed off as white to get access to educational opportunities back in the late 1800s.
According to Variety, the singer will star in A White Lie movie that talks about the first black woman that graduates from Vassar College.
The film is based on Karin Tanabe’s book named The Gilded Years.
Hemmings hid her identity for four years and was treated as an elite white woman at the school of her dreams until her roommate got suspicious about her race. After the roommate’s father hires a private investigator, he discovers that Hemmings was black. The family alerted the school officials some weeks before graduation. But Hemmings made an appeal to the university president and so she kept her secret and graduated in 1897.
She attended the Vassar College for decades before the school got integrated.
“There were large numbers of African Americans at that time and into the turn of the century [for whom passing] was a means to gain opportunities in education,” Africana studies professor Joyce Bickerstaff told the university outlet in 2002.
“The country was under laws of segregation, and those families who had risen to that level of educational aspiration or economics were still excluded from most of the elite institutions.”
The thriller will be written by Monica Beletsky and co-produced by Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter.
Zendaya, started her acting career in 2010 on Disney’s Shake It Up, and recently co-starred in Spider-Man: Homecoming and will next appear in The Greatest Showman, scheduled to hit theaters in December.
