10 Home Remedies For Damaged And Lifeless Hair


The hair consists of three parts. Medulla is the inner fiber, the cortex is the middle one and the otter part is the cuticle that protects the hair. If the outer layer gets damaged the hair starts to lose its shine and becomes dry, also, has no elasticity and it breaks off easily. The ends of the hair start to split and the scalp gets itchy.
It can happen for a variety of reasons such as exposure to hot climate, excessive washing, excessive styling and using of heating devices and exposure to UV sun rays. Also, the cause can be some medical conditions like a hereditary problem, malnutrition and underactive thyroid.
Whenever you are facing problems with damaged and dry hair you could try some homemade natural remedies that will help your hair recover from the damage and retract its shine. However, you also need to be patient because the damaged hair can’t repair overnight.

1. Olive oil

That’s right, good old olive oil with its fatty acids, vitamin E and few antioxidants it perfect for damaged hair. It seals the cuticle with moisture.
Take some olive oil and apply it to your scalp and start massaging few minutes. Then cover your hair with a towel and leave it for 30 minutes or overnight. Finally, wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner. You should repeat this at least once a week.
Also, you as a remedy you can use a mixture of ¼ cup of olive oil and a half cup of honey. After warming this mixture apply it to your hair, leave it on for 30 minutes and wash it off well. Do this for once or two times per week.

2. Avocado


Avocado is also very good for your damaged hair. It is rich in proteins, fat, vitamins and natural oils which will help you in keeping your hair hydrated and flexible.
Mix the pulp of one half or one a ripe avocado, depending on how long is your hair, with one or two teaspoons of olive oil in a blender until you get a smooth consistency. After applying the mixture on your hair leave it for an hour and then wash it off. Or, use the following remedy. Mash one ripe avocado and add one egg yolk and some coconut milk until it is a thing paste.

Massage this paste into your scalp for 5 minutes in circular movements and leave it for an hour before washing it with lukewarm water and shampoo.
Also, these two remedies you can repeat once a week in order to heal your damaged hair.

3. Egg

Egg yolk is rich in protein, essential fatty acids, minerals which can nourish the hair strands and make your hair shiny again.
You can use these following treatments with egg yolks once every two weeks.
Take one whisked egg, massage it on your scalp for few minutes and cover with a shower cap. After twenty minutes, rinse it with cool water and shampoo. Or, alternatively, you could beat two eggs along with a half cup of yogurt and add one and a half tablespoon of almond oil. Beat again until you get a creamy mixture that you will massage your scalp with. Cover it with a towel and after 30 minutes rinse it off.

4. Aloe vera

Aloe vera with its enzymes, vitamins C and E, amino acids is ideal for your damaged hair.
Use either of these treatments that include aloe vera once a week.
Firstly, you can apply some aloe vera juice on your hair, and wash it off after fifteen minutes. Or, mix four tablespoons of aloe vera gel, two tablespoons of coconut oil and three tablespoons of plain yogurt. Apply the mixture to your hair and leave it up to half an hour before rinsing it off.

5. Coconut oil

The coconut oil with its lauric acid and medium-chain fatty acids are really good for your damaged hair. It prevents the cuticle from damaging and helps keep your hair healthy.
Apply warm coconut oil on your scalp and massage it for five minutes and leave it overnight. Repeat this every day or at least three times per week. Or, mix three tablespoons of warm coconut oil in a ¼ cup of honey and Blend thoroughly before applying it one your hair. Wash it off after twenty to thirty minutes. Repeat this two times a week.

6. Banana

The banana is rich in potassium, natural oils and fortifying vitamins, which will soften your hair and make it more elastic. Repeat the following treatment once every week or two.
You can mash one ripe banana and apply it on your hair. After one hour rinse it off with lukewarm water.
As another option, you can prepare a mask. Blend two overripe bananas with one tablespoon each of coconut oil, olive oil, and honey and apply the paste to your hair. After 20 to 30 minutes rinse it off.

7. Hibiscus


Hibiscus moisturizes the hair and also makes the dry hair shiny.

Take eight to ten hibiscus flowers, heat them in one cup of coconut oil until charred and allow it to cool down. After massage it on your hair for few minutes and after thirty minutes wash your hair. Alternatively, you can grind three to four hibiscus leaves and the petals of two flowers with water. Apply it on your hair and leave it for twenty minutes. Rinse it off with warm water and repeat for once or twice a week.

Black tea is rich in vitamins C and E and also polyphenols which will add shine and softness to your damaged hair.
Repeat the following treatment two times a week. Take one black tea bag and add it to a boiling one cup of water and leave it covered for ten minutes. Afterwards, add one or two drops of jasmine essential oil and use this as a final rinse after washing your hair previously with shampoo. Leave it on for ten to fifteen minutes and wash it off.

9. Honey


Honey attracts and locks moisture into your hair cuticles and makes them healthy.
Take ¼ cup of raw organic honey and mix it with enough water to thin it out. Apply it to your hair, leave it for half an hour and rinse it off with warm water. Repeat twice a week.
As another option, you can prepare a hair mask. Mix and warm the following ingredients: one tablespoon of plain yogurt, two tablespoons of honey, and one tablespoon of olive oil or coconut oil. After applying it on your hair cover your head with a shower cap and leave it for twenty minutes before you rinse it off. Use it once per week.
Note: If you use a honey hair mask frequently it can lighten your hair.

10. White vinegar


This one might come as a surprise but yes, the white vinegar can be one of the remedies for your damaged hair. It helps remove the built-up residue from your hair and to seal the cuticles as well.

Also, it helps restore the natural pH level of your scalp.
Mix together one cup of distilled white vinegar and three cups of water and use it for rinsing your hair after conditioning. Leave it to sit for five minutes and rinse it off with lukewarm water. You can do this once a week or every few weeks.

Additional tips

-Before going to bed massage your scalp few minutes because it stimulates the hair follicles
-Avoid excessive washing and using of all the heating tools
-Use a conditioner but make sure that you rinse it thoroughly
-Gently wash and brush your hair
-Rinse your hair after swimming
