The 2019 Met Gala Theme Has Been Announced And We’re Thrilled To See The Ensembles

We can’t wait for another Met Gala full of extraordinary ensembles. This year’s looks were out-of-this-world gorgeous, and we are honestly thrilled to see what our faves have in store for 2019! Well, we can’t begin assuming without first knowing the theme to the 2019 Met Gala.

To the rescue. The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced on Tuesday that its Costume Institute’s fashion exhibit for spring 2019 is going to be “Camp: Notes on Fashion.”

This exhibition is going to be framed around Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay known as ‘Notes on Camp’ for the Partisan Review, and the essence of camp is the love of artifice, the unnatural, and exaggeration, according to Sontag. So, 2019 Met Gala will be following the same theme.

The event will be co-chaired by Anna Wintour, Serena Williams, Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, and Alessandro Michele. It will be held on Monday, on the 6th of May, 2019.

The annual fundraising Gala, internationally known as the Met Gala, has always raised the curiosity of the audience. The themes of the event have always required from the A-listed guests to show their most extraordinary and creative self.

Last year, the theme was: “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”, this year, however, it will be “Camp: Notes on Fashion”. But what exactly is camp? Well, it’s in correlation to Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay for the Partisan Review, “Notes on ‘Camp”, and it’s reportedly a very influential writing that introduced camp as a concept to mainstream culture. More specifically, in her essay, she talked about camp as a ‘sensibility’ that rejects aesthetic judgment on a scale of good to bad. She wrote:

Camp is playful, anti-serious…

She said that it celebrates “style’ over ‘content,’ ‘aesthetics’ over ‘morality,’ and ‘irony’ over ‘tragedy.” She listed women’s clothing in the 20s, such as feather boas, or beaded dresses, as one example of camp.

“Camp: Notes on Fashion,” will explore the origins of camp as an aesthetic, its evolution from the margins of society to the mainstream, as well as the influence it had in the fashion world, according to Met’s website.

People took to Twitter to express their excitement over the announcement. See below:
