One Australian tourist was shocked to see he was left with red marks across his back after he thought he got a relaxing massage in Bali. Candise Raison and her husband Matthew, from Paringa in South Australia, were six days into their holiday in Bali when they treated themselves a massage. Candise told Daily Mail Australia that they opted for a ‘go jek’ message which is a service where the masseur comes to you and not the other way around. When it was Matthew’s turn, he was asked if he wanted to ‘get the red dragon out of him’.
Matthew thought that perhaps the masseur wanted ‘to try some prayer thing‘ when Candise said:
I don’t know what you’re saying but my husband will try anything, go for it!
Candise explained how the masseur started carving Matthew’s body with a coin, telling them that by tomorrow it will become a ‘red dragon’. This treatment is called gua sha is it intends to release impurities from muscle tissue. The next day, Matthew was pictured with huge red marks across it, from the top of his neck and down to his tailbone. But Candice saw the funny side of it, as she was pictured smiling.
Fair to say we were all in tears of laughter.
The couple had been holidaying in Bali with Candise’s sister when they got the massage that left Matthew with huge red marks, but Candise said that the treatment worked wonders for her husband’s chronic back pain. Matthew works for SA Networks on the power lines and Candice revealed that he had been complaining about his sore back for the past three years.
He hasn’t complained about a sore back since!
He said it felt like an itch waiting to be itched, and then when it finally got scratched it was fantastic!
The marks did not break his skin and five days after he got the massage, his back when back to normal. Candise explained:
The marks are still slightly there but almost non-existent.
It’s something he will most likely get again with the way he enjoyed it.
What exactly is gua sha?
Gua sha is an Asian medical practice where the side of a coin is rubbed in parallel stripes on the chest and back. The technique is believed to release unhealthy body matter from sore, tired, stiff or injured muscles and stimulate new, oxygenated blood flow. Legend has it that gua sha can even treat symptoms of the common cold such as nausea, loss of appetite, headaches, and fainting. After the massage, people are often left feeling tired and sleepy but will be refreshed after several hours of sleep. A lot of people even take painkillers after the treatment.
