As the end of the year draws closer, we should all reflect on the year we’re leaving behind. What are some of the best things that happened? What are the worst? The happiest moments, and the most heartbreaking ones.
Did you meet someone new that changed your life? Was it for the better or the worse? Is there something you did that you regret? Did you read any new books? What new knowledge did you acquire? Did you learn something new about yourself? Did you learn something new about someone you love?
Did you pick up a new hobby? Ditch a bad habit? Ditch someone toxic, perhaps? What were your favorite songs? What were your favorite movies? What were your favorite books? These are all questions we’d all benefit to sit down and answer to ourselves, and perhaps we will learn something new about ourselves, even if it’s near the end.
One person who likes reflecting on the past year is Barack Obama. The former American president took to Instagram on Friday to share some of his favorite songs, movies, and books of 2018 – and yes, Michelle Obama‘s new book, Becoming, was naturally included.

“As 2018 draws to a close, I’m continuing a favorite tradition of mine and sharing my year-end lists,” Obama wrote. “It gives me a moment to pause and reflect on the year through the books, movies, and music that I found most thought-provoking, inspiring, or just plain loved. It also gives me a chance to highlight talented authors, artists, and storytellers – some who are household names and others who you may not have heard of before. Swipe through to see my best of 2018 list – I hope you enjoy reading, watching, and listening.”
