Whether or not architecture should fall under the definition of “art” has been a debated topic for a long time. Some say architecture is not art as it is simply the construction of a fixed structure for the benefit of society, whereas others stand firmly that yes, architecture is art.
But first what is art defined as? What is architecture?
Well, art has never been defined properly though artists have been trying to do so since art itself has been around. The Oxford dictionary defines art as “The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.” As for architecture, the Oxford Dictionary entry for it reads: “The art or practice of designing and constructing buildings.”
Now, even though architects design buildings or bridges or other useful physical structures, that does not mean they can’t make us feel, as art is known to do. I mean have you ever seen St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow, or the Notre Dame, or the Angkor Wat temple in Cambodia? Or even the entirety of Prague? Do those absolutely stunning pieces of architecture not make you feel something, even if you can’t quite describe it?
Well, regardless of what your stand on the topic is, I think we can all agree that if there’s one overlap between art and architecture it has to be fountains. There are so many beautiful, breath-taking fountains in the world that will truly leave you in awe of their designers, and maybe even shift you firmly on the “architecture is art” side.
