Call me when the book is published!
Apparently, the story of a poignant summer romance between teenager Elio (Timothée Chalamet) and the slightly older Oliver (Armie Hammer), will further evolve in the next sequel.
The fiction, romance novel was originally written by the American writer, André Aciman and was first published on January 23, 2007. The story revolves around a graduate student who visits Elio’s family home in Italy. It explores the summer romance between these two very distinct characters; one who is trying to discover the world, and another one who is learning to inhabit it. The book has been adapted into a film and released in 2017.
One of the differences between the film and the novel is that the film ends with the pair still young, while the book gives a glimpse into Oliver and Elio’s future, showing how the two meet 20 years after their short affair. Intriguing, indeed!
Aciman tweeted this month, revealing he is working on the book sequel:
I would actually love a sequel to Call Me By Your Name. In fact I am writing one.
But, the author is not the only one to keep interest in the project. Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer have both expressed their eagerness about a sequel. Timothée said:
I don’t see any world where it doesn’t happen. I think André is comfortable with a sequel being made. And I know Armie and I are 1,000 percent in.
Whereas, Hammer only confirmed what Chalamet’s said with a “BOOOOOOOOM!”
However, of course, there has to be one person citing disbelief in a possible sequel. It would be impossible for the screenwriter, James Ivory to make Timothée Chalamet look forty-five. “I mean, that would be horrendous and so fake looking,” he said, referencing novel’s epilogue.
According to the director, Luca Guadagnino, the sequel’s setting will be in 1990, “the time of the fall of communism and the start of the new world order and the so-called ‘The End of History.'” Luca also has this firm belief that Elio won’t still be ready to embrace his identity as a gay man.
“I can tell you that I believe that he would start an intense relationship with Marzia again,” Luca continued. While our imagination is digging for possible storylines, Aciman himself has not given more detailed insight into the sequel.
Whatever the sequel might bring, I’m ready to grab a copy already!
Meanwhile, 2019 is already coming with more surprises:
