Pizza lovers everywhere, unite, for I have some really good news!
Forget everything that’s been said about pizza being unhealthy, disregard all the weird looks you’ve gotten and the guilt you felt when you cracked open a box of leftover pizza first thing in the morning.
“Why?” you ask. Well, because you may have been healthier than all those who were pouring themselves a bowl of cereal all along.
Chelsey Amer, a dietitian, and blogger, has told the Evening Standard that a slice of pizza makes a better breakfast option than a bowl of cereal. The dietician said: “You may be surprised to find out that an average slice of pizza and a bowl of cereal with whole milk contain nearly the same amount of calories.” But, she adds, “pizza packs a much larger protein punch, which will keep you full and boost satiety throughout the morning.”
Does that mean that pizza is now automatically considered healthy and you should start munching on it every chance you get? Of course not! But it is still a more balanced meal than a bowl of cereal, which is usually high on sugar.
However, this also doesn’t mean that cereal is automatically always unhealthy. Fellow dietitian, Priya Tew, told the publishing that whether or not cereal is a good breakfast choice depends on which type you choose. If you opt for a whole grain cereal that’s high on fiber, add milk for calcium, and top it off with fruit, then you are more than set.
Similarly, she added that pizzas which are heavy on the cheese and pepperoni aren’t good for you, but if they are laden with vegetables then it might just work.
And hey, I don’t know about you, but a veggie pizza slice sounds pretty good to me, and you can be the responsible adult who makes good, healthy choices while simultaneously living your teenage dream of eating “junk food” for breakfast!
