Oops, they’ve done it again.
Fast and Furious will be back on the big screen in 2020 with filming scheduled to begin next month, making this latest addition the 9th installment in the franchise. Even though a specific date and location haven’t been announced yet, according to MovieWeb, it looks like filming for Fast and Furious 9 will begin in London.
The Fast and Furious movies, and its spin-off starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Statham, have amassed over $5 billion at the Box Office, cementing their place as one of the highest grossing movie franchises of all time.
And now, they’re making a ninth one, and show no sign of stopping any time soon. As a matter of fact, Dwayne Johnson said in an interview last year: “When you have a franchise that is as successful as the Fast and Furious franchise, the goal, certainly my goal, was always to try and create a scenario where we have as much longevity as we possibly can have.”
And not only are they not stopping the movie additions, but they keep making them bigger and bigger. When asked whether he would consider outer space for the direction the movies can take, F Gary Gray, director for The Fate of the Furious told ScreenRant: “Outer space? Listen, I wouldn’t rule anything out with this franchise. When I read ‘submarine’ [in The Fate of the Furious], I’m like, ‘OK, anything’s possible’. You never know. I haven’t read ‘Dom on Mars’ yet, but again, you just never know.”
There had been talk of the ninth movie being released in April 2019, but the date has been pushed back to 2020. Vin Diesel took to Instagram to address the speculations over why the date was pushed. “It would be unfair to say it is anyone’s fault,” he wrote. “Like any vehicle that has run around the globe eight times, the franchise is in need of maintenance. My good friend and the godfather of Universal, Ron Meyer has granted me the time to do just that.”
In even more exciting news, it appears as though we might be seeing a Fast and Furious female spin-off, courtesy of Vin Diesel!
