It’s no secret that makeup has the power to drastically change someone’s appearance if you were so inclined. A large number of women wear makeup on a daily basis and, subtle as it may be, it can still enhance some of our best features and make us look our best. And makeup is such an ingrained part of our daily lives, that we’ve all probably had at least one encounter where a co-worker or friend has asked whether we’re feeling sick on a day we’ve gone makeup-free.
I imagine this pressure to look flawless is even greater for people who are on a public platform.
Having been used to seeing her with a full face of makeup and looking impeccable, Twitch streamer Pokimane’s fans were left shocked to see her begin this Monday’s stream without a stitch of makeup on. She decided to appear makeup-less to show her fans just how much work goes into getting ready for one of her streams.
So she began doing her makeup and fixing her hair over the next two-and-a-half hours, saying:
I know not having makeup on is unusual, and some people might meme me for it, or say whatever. But I think it’s good to not always just be promoting ‘I look like this naturally.’ Because girls just don’t. When you have makeup on, you look like you have makeup on.
And she was right to anticipate the backlash, since quickly after a number of men and boys began to pish insults her way, making fun of her bare face and saying they’d been “catfished”. Apparently, seeing a woman without makeup really took a blow to their sensibilities.
So, a number of her fellow female streamers took to social media to defend her, and post pictures of themselves with bare faces, like Omen community manager and streamer Sloane, who said: “Hate to break it to you, but if you think you’re going to find a girl who looks flawless with and without makeup, you’re going to have a hard time. Also you have to be really insecure to make fun of someone else’s looks. Time to grow up.”
Girlwithyellowspoon, another streamer and Twitch partner, posted a picture of herself with no makeup, writing: “This is gonna sound crazy but…did you KNOW that girls aren’t born with black lines on their eyes, their skin isn’t flawless, and get this, their hair isn’t perfect when they wake up either???? WOW THIS IS SUCH CRAZY NEW INFO FASCINATING DISCOVERY.”

If you judge someone for “too much makeup” or lack thereof, you can frick off dudes. pic.twitter.com/BVKXDO2Uon

Even some of her male fellow streamers jumped to defend her in the ridiculous backlash she’s faced.
Mark Zimmerman, League of Legends analyst, wrote: “People shocked about how Pokimane looks w/o makeup just outing that they probably haven’t had a girlfriend. Even worse outing that they’ve never had a female friend consider them close enough to hang out with no makeup on. Big yikes.”
As for Pokimake, whose real name is Imane Anys, she doesn’t seem to be taking this too hard, as she tweeted earlier this week that she is ” at peace with myself, my body & my imperfections, and I wish the same someday for anyone who feels the need to hate on someone else for such shallow reasons.”
To conclude yesterday’s drama, here are some no make-up selfies but from regular/cute angles and with natural lighting 😌🌸
