The world is divided into so many categories and sub-categories (just like movies.) Take, for instance, there are people out there who enjoy watching TV shows, while, on the other hand, there are those who are crazy fans of movies, be it an ’80s movie or a new release. And let’s not leave aside the ones who are into documentaries, or those who want to have it all starting from TV shows to documentaries. Question, in which category do you fall? I’d consider myself a TV show and documentary lover.
Anyway, what we’re here about is to appreciate the great movies of the eighties. It’s just, they had everything, starting from horror movies, action, romance, or comedy and, truth be told, we can’t but love them even though they are 30 years old. What flourished the most during that period of time were the Dance movies. There’s no denying that this genre was excelled back then.
Take, for instance, Dirty Dancing, Flashdance and Footloose. These movies are still relevant to the day we live. However, a movie that is left behind even though it doesn’t deserve it, is ‘Girls Just Want To Have Fun’. Have you watched it? If not, maybe now it is a good chance to. Even if you haven’t, here you can find some very credible reasons why you should watch it, as the list goes on and on.
1. The movie is a great fish-out-of-water
This is how the story goes! Janey Glenn (Sarah Jessica Parker) has to move to Chicago as her father gets transferred there. As she moves there, she obviously has to go to a new school only for her to find her love of dancing. She then meets Lynne Stone (Helen Hunt) who she becomes friends with. Lynne helps Janey a lot to deal and go out of her comfort zone and to chase her dreams.
I mean, isn’t this enough of a reason to watch the movie? We all need friends like this who push us to do things we love in case we hold back for some reason.
Lynne gives Janey a helping hand to go beyond her comfort zone which is full of rules, schedules, and military time. Because of Lynne, Janey learns how to have fun.
2. They immediately show us what we really want
As soon as Lynne and Janey meet one another – that is in a bus where Lynne changes her outfit in front of her – the duo goes to watch Dance TV at the house where Lynne has a babysitting job.
This way, the audience immediately gets an idea what the two are into. While Janey wants to enter the dance contest, Lynne, on the other hand, wants to be the queen of DTV. Yes, it is simple as that. We also got a bonus from watching the movie as we get to see a little bit of dancing by the DTV stars.

3. The contest is perfect
We can’t but admire the great montage that this movie has. The first one is at the contest where they are trying to make it to the next round.
Janey stands out, out of all the bunch of people who dance in the movie. What makes her special are the acrobatics and flips. And, she also meets Jeff there.
Jeff is also a talented dancer and he proves this when showing his skills by just spinning around the stage.
4. The classic odd couple relationship
Can you imagine the craziness Jeff the untrained and Janey the perfectionists gives us when paired together? Yeah, well, me too.
It’s kind of a reversal of the roles in Dirty Dancing, where Janey has to teach Jeff how to dance, and just like Patrick Swayze, she’s getting super frustrated with him.
5. Strained relationships = movie magic
Even when they are going through a lot, it’s fun to watch. I mean, couples wouldn’t be couples if they wouldn’t get in each other’s nerves. Also, it doesn’t help that the spoiled Natalie is constantly trying to sabotage them.
6. Girl power wins the day
A friend in need is a friend indeed. Yes, Lynne proves this when Natalie attempts to ruin Janey’s chances so Lynne kicks in to give her friend a helping hand. Their plan is to sabotage her party by inviting people she didn’t want there.
It is this event that Jeff and Janey bond more as Jeff sees that Janey isn’t always so uptight.
7. True friendship = break your friends out of house arrest
Lynne Stone is honestly goals. I envy Janney so much, not that my friends are not good, but Lynne is gold. Lynne was the one to push Janney to chase her dreams, as well as helped her when Janney’s dad put a security system on her window.
She helped her get down to the bottom floor while sporting the best hairstyle ever and then brought her all the way to the studio just in time.
8. More dance, better the movie
I know what you’re thinking, “there are already so many montages, how could they add another?” Well, don’t worry because they have more. You see portions of all the finalists dance routines while her dad frantically tries to make it to the station after seeing his daughter on TV.
9. Too late for her daddy to stop them
Janey and Jeff take the whole routine to a whole new level. Also, let us agree that Baby and Johnny’s lift has nothing on Janey and Jeff’s. Also, truth be told, the movie came out two years before Dirty Dancing.
10. The real winner is Lynne Stone
I am not sure if there’s a way to emphasize that Lynn Stone is the real star of the movie. She is perfection herself and deserves so much. When she comes out on that carriage as the new self-appointed queen of DTV, it’s like the world finally has recognized her true purpose in life.
If these reasons didn’t prove to you that everyone should watch Girls Just Want To Have Fun, I don’t know what will, ever.
