Each year becomes even more difficult than the last when it comes to Halloween costumes. It feels like everything you think of people have already done it, adding any twists to your Halloween dress ups it’s the only thing left to do. Halloween or also known as All Hallows’ Eve, or All Saints’ Eve falls every year on the 31st of October.
Originally, 2,000 years old in the area now known as Ireland, the Celts who lived there celebrated the beginning of the new year on November 1st. So, on the night of 31st of October, it was believed that on this same night the ghosts of the dead came back on earth.
In addition to the celebration, the Celts wore animals’ skin on their head and tried to tell the fortune of one another. When the commemoration was over they lit the fires that were put down earlier that night, that was believed to help and protect them throughout the tough winter that was approaching.
Halloween started being celebrated in the US during the second part of the nineteenth century. However, at the beginning of the century, when immigrants came to the United States, people would gather around and tell scary stories, fortune telling, sing, and dance.
Now as I mentioned before, the wearing of the costumes originates from the Celts. According to the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, they wore different animals’ skin or their heads but in the “modern times”, Halloween is celebrated by carving pumpkins, trick or treating, decorating your house or work environment. It really all depends on you and the levels you are willing to go through. Having parties, dressing up (scary or not, still depends on you). People nowadays don’t celebrate Halloween as they did over 2,000 years ago but we do wear costumes, fake animal skin maybe or their fake heads. It is a holiday celebrated from many and quite anticipated, some even go as far as starting to decorate their homes early October, plan months ahead about their costumes, the party they will host, the candy and sweets they will share with the kids. It is indeed a lot of work.
