How To Use Highlighter: Where To Apply It & Different Types Of Highlighter

And, no, we’re not talking about the one used while studying to mark and annotate specific parts of the text. We’re talking about the one used to mark and shimmer specific parts of your face.

Makeup has taken the world by storm nowadays. It is all over the place, and people are constantly trying to find new ways to make their makeup routines easier, more unique, and stand out. People have been putting makeup ever since the beginning of time. Although before there was a lack of makeup of products, people used whatever they thought was suitable to fill in their eyebrows, or their lips. However, with the beauty industry growing every day and with the new inventions coming forth every day in the world of cosmetics, people have managed to get their beauty products, do their makeup, and feel great while at it.

Although each makeup procedure or routine varies from the next one, all of them are basically the same. People’s preferences change but they all have features of their face they want to bring forward and enhance their already existing beauty. Primers, foundations, lip liners, eyeshadows, are only some of the products in the makeup stash of people who do their makeup first thing in the morning, or when they have a night out.

As mentioned, makeup products have a long history. I mean, did you know that Cleopatra is said to have soaked her ship sails in her perfume so everyone could smell her arrival? Also, the Elizabethan-era women have, reportedly, used coal tar as mascara and liner, but unfortunately many of them went blind by its usage. Anyway, makeup should be used effectively and carefully, and people should be careful with the products they purchase. Taking into consideration that the beauty industry generates around 170 billion worldwide, it’s fair to repeat, makeup has taken the world by storm and we’re not complaining. We absolutely love it.

Let’s speak the Highlighter Language, shall we?

When it comes to highlighter people have divided opinions. Some of them like it, others do not include it in their makeup routines. But, whatever the case may be, it’s not you, highlighter, it’s us. You’re pretty cool and shimmery. But others, like myself, are absolutely obsessed with it. Maybe I do not opt for it on a daily basis, but I definitely do when I want to make my face stand out in the crowd. Yes, I like the shine & glimmer.

There are different types of highlighter you can opt for, depending on your preferences or even skin types. It’s all up to you. According to Bustle, the different types of highlighters are:

– Liquid Highlighter: They are the most versatile types of highlighters.

– Powder Highlighter: In powder highlighter form you can find the most universal shade, with it being: the golden peachy highlight.

– Solid Stick Highlighter: Apparently, these types of highlighters are perfect for getting the most advantage of the light.

– Potted Highlighter: These are the perfect type of highlighters to use if you do not wear lots of other makeup. They press light into the skin without a base color.

But… but… how exactly do I use a highlighter?

It’s important to mention, we can use a highlighter in every capacity. According to Style Caster, the highlighter is a ‘wonderful gem,’ and we agree. It’s a genius and simple way to make your overall makeup look stand out with a bit of light and glow. And, to be fair, who wouldn’t want that? So below you will find a few ways on how you can use the highlighter:

1. Apple of the cheek

Research suggests that using a highlighter in the apple of the cheek is a wonderful option. Meaning, if you want a glowing skin, simply apply a bit of highlighter in the center of the apple of your cheek over blush.

2. The inner corner of the eye

To brighten up a dark area, opt for highlighter in the inner corner of the eye. So, add just a pinch of highlighter in the inner corner of your eyes, and you’re good to go.

3. Cheekbones

To define your cheekbones, add highlighter in a diagonal line from beneath the center of your eye and blend towards your hairline.

4. Beneath the arch of your eyebrows

According to L’Oréal Paris, applying highlighter beneath the arch of your eyebrows will make your eyes appear more awake and will define the shape of your eyebrows.

5. Above the arch of your eyebrows

This has the same effect as the aforementioned. It will definitely define the shape of your eyebrows and make your eyes appear more illuminated.

6. Above cupid’s bow & in the center of your chin

If you want to put the attention to your lips, then you should apply a bit of highlighter to your cupid’s bow. And opt for a bit in the center of your chin if you want to get a more defined, and contoured appearance as L’Oréal Paris suggests.

7. Bridge of your nose

If you want to contour your nose a bit, add some highlighter in the bridge of your nose, and then blend foundation that is a shade or two darker than your natural skin tone, to make your nose appear slimmer.

8. Forehead center

Adding some highlighter to the center of your forehead, especially when you apply bronzer to your temples, will create a more contoured appearance.

How do I use the highlighter stick?

It’s important to also know the ways you should use the different highlighter types. For example, the highlighter stick. I mean, we already mentioned that these types of highlighters are perfect for getting the most advantage of the light. Now, research suggests, that this type of highlighter is perfect for when you want a quick touch-up on the go. What you need to do is mark the areas you would like to feature with the stick and blend it into your skin with either a makeup blender, a brush, or fingertips.

How do I use the highlighter powder?

The powder highlighter and its soft texture will ensure you get a simple and natural makeup look, and the face will look fresh and neat. When applying it, you should start off lightly and then build up the product slowly through layers, so you can control the amount and strength of illumination.

How to apply highlighter powder?

According to L’Oréal Paris, you should build up from the base when applying powder highlight. It’s recommended to go in this order:

Prime

Apply foundation

Set with powder

Apply blush or bronzer

Highlight

What should you remember when applying the highlighter?

When applying highlighter, you should consider the environment. According to Get The Gloss, if you’re going for a night out, and you know you will get photographed a lot, make sure not to overdo on highlighter since it might end up looking sweaty in photographs, although it looks pretty and nice to the naked eye. Also, if there are features of your face you do not want to bring forward and accentuate, choose not to put highlighter on those areas. At the end of the day, it’s all up to you.
