5 Humidifier Benefits You Probably Didn’t Know About

If whenever you think about winter you equate it with dry skin, chapped lips, scratchy throats, dry coughs, and what more, then you may be a candidate for using an air humidifier in your home. Humidifiers are electrical appliances that add humidity (moisture) in the air.

One of the reasons humidity levels drop is cold air which cannot hold as much moisture as warm air, therefore, during winter, humidity levels can go as low as 10-20%. However, low humidity can also occur in arid regions of the country (the southwest) during summer as a result of excessive air conditioning, which reduces moisture from the air. Such low levels can cause adverse health effects, as they dry out the mucous membranes of the nose and throat and can also cause respiratory problems. As a result, the risk of cold, flu and other infections is substantially increased as well. The low humidity also can cause shrinkage, loose joints or cracks in wooden furniture. Even plants, books, papers, and artworks, may get affected by low humidity, by shrinking, warping and becoming brittle.

Having this in mind, proper indoor humidity is crucial to your health. Therefore, one of the best methods to balance the levels of humidity in your room or house is using one or more quality vaporizers or humidifiers. One, however, has to be cautious in using humidifiers, as overusing them can promote the growth of dust mites and mold, and can also cause hypersensitivity pneumonitis (humidifier lung).

Humidifier Benefits

1. Happier Plants

Did you know that low humidity can also affect plants? Well, now you know. Humidity influences the amount of water needed and the health of its leaves. So, while high levels of humidity decrease the amount of water lost by a plant through transpiration (aka the evaporation of water from a plant’s leaves), low levels of humidity increase the amount of water lost through transpiration. That’s why your plants will love for bringing an air humidifier on board!

2. Long-lasting furnishings

The low humidity also can cause shrinkage, loose joints or cracks in wooden furniture. This happens because when the slat of a wood furtnitue or floor separate, the gaps will be filled with dust, which keeps them from closing back. Even books, papers, and artworks may get affected by low humidity, by shrinking, warping and becoming brittle. But, that expensive paint job you paid for could last for a long time if you simply add some moisture in the air when needed. Humidifier to the rescue!

3. Avoid colds & flu

According to Medical News Today, authors of one study concluded that humidifiers might reduce the risk of catching influenza. They added the influenza virus to the air with a simulated cough and noticed that humidity levels above 40 % rapidly deactivated virus particles, making them much less likely to be infectious.

For more, modern humidifiers are a great way to help alleviate the symptoms of allergies as well. So, if you suffer from any allergies, you will feel more comfortable with heightened humidity, as it may help soothe the tissues in the throat and nasal passages.

4. No more dry throats, coughs, and bloody noses

Low humidity can cause a person to have a dry throat and unproductive coughs. Increasing humidity to the air can get more moisture into the airways, which can make a cough more productive. A productive cough releases trapped or sticky phlegm.

5. Treats dry skin

Because 50-60% of the human body is made of water, dry conditions may reduce moisture, thus, leaving behind dry skin, chapped lips, and possibly even bloodshot eyes.

Especially during cold temperatures, your body’s skin becomes dry and fragile due to the lack of moisture. Even the many types of heating units which pump hot, dry air can make the skin dry, itchy, or flaky. But, using a humidifier will increase moisture to the indoor air and help to reduce the occurrence of dry, cracked skin.
