What symbolizes the beginning of the holiday season? No, it’s not the dropping temperatures. It’s not the polar bear Coca-Cola commercials either. Christmas season officially starts when they start playing Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You on the radio. The connection between one of the world’s greatest divas and one of the world’s most popular holiday is so strong, that some people have even gone as far as renaming the holiday season ‘Mariah season.’ Did you know that, reportedly, the 47-year-old singer still makes more than $500.000 every year thanks to that song? Unbelievable! And what better way to make good use of her dramatic rise in popularity at the beginning of winter than launching a Christmas tour across the world?
But wait, here comes the best part!
Turns out that singing in five octaves is not even close to being the most amazing thing Mariah Carey can do. During a performance at the AHF World AIDS Day concert in Los Angeles on November 30, the powerhouse singer actually defied gravity! In a video that recently went viral and has nearly driven the online community insane, Carey can be seen signing some autographs for her devoted fans, aka her ‘lambs’ as she lovingly calls them, while sitting down. On an invisible chair. Seriously. She is sitting down, she signs a couple of things, she gets up, and poof! No chair. See for yourself, if you don’t believe me:

How did she do it?
That is the question on everyone’s lips, or at least fingertips, as the Twittersphere went wild with astonishment and disbelief. Speculation was rife, as everyone gave their own take on what had actually happened.
The Internet wouldn’t be the Internet without providing some truly out-there explanations for everything. Amongst the best theories were, of course, a real invisible chair, muscles made of steel, and, the best one, that the Christmas season infuses her with superpowers! The general consensus was that Mariah Carey is awesome and magical, and that she is more than a match for anything, including gravity.
The wet blanket
While most of the fans were too busy one-upping each other by coming up with the silliest explanations possible, one Twitterer decided that this was a perfect teachable moment. Molly used the power of logic and science to shatter our illusion about the existence of Christmas superpowers (and you know that if anyone could possess those, it would definitely be Mariah Carey).
“This is the heel sit. it works especially well if youre wearing something tight. dont ask me how, i guess its from your legs squishing together and from the added height off the ground from the heels and the resistance from the tight dress, but its a thing,” she tweeted. Cheers, Molly…
This performance was Mariah’s first return to the stage since she was forced to cancel the first few shows of her tour due to a respiratory infection.
Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” 2017 tour is set to continue in Paris, France, on December 9, and after a couple of stops in the United Kingdom (Manchester, December 10, and London, December 11), return to the United States for five shows in Las Vegas, Nevada, December 14-22.
Happy Mariah season everyone!
