We are used to beads of sweat that appear after an intense workout. We completely foresee it, but none of us wants to be drenched in sweat at work, nor on a date. Eccrine glands are particularly located on the face, head, palms of the hands and soles of the feet. Apocrine glands are concentrated in the armpits and groins area. These glands can be overactive under various situations like stress, hot weather, or even the clothes we wear.  According to Womenshealth, 2-3 % of people who sweat excessively might suffer from a rare condition that is called hyperhidrosis. According to Healthline, one of the sweating causes is a high temperature of your body or the environment you’re staying in. We have witnessed during the summer days when we stay outside in the sun rays, we tend to sweat more than we normally do.

Emotional state

For many times now, it’s been scientifically proved that sweat can also be triggered by our emotional state. If we feel stressed before a job interview, an important meeting or even a date, chances are that we will sweat. Besides stress, the emotion of fear, anger, embarrassment have also proven to increase the amount of sweat that is produced in our body.

Food

Sweat itself is odorless but consuming some types of food not only induces sweating but also can make the sweat smell worse. Spicy food should be reduced from your list because it is one of the factors that make you perspire more. When we eat spicy food we trick our brain to think that we’re overheated so more sweat is produced to help us cool off the body temperature. Alcohol and hot beverages can also provoke sweating. Medication/Illnesses

Sweating aka perspiration might also be caused by side effects of medications that we are using. In addition, certain illnesses can make us sweat more and if we suspect for this to be a problem, we should contact our healthcare provider. Moreover, menopause in women is said to also trigger sweating.

One of the most important functions of sweating is the regulation of body temperature. Whenever we overheat, a message is sent to our brain that we don’t have the core temperature and as wetness goes out in the surface of the skin it evaporates and our body temperature cools down. Furthermore, whenever we do strenuous workouts, if it weren’t for sweating we would overheat, but thanks to it our temperature is regulated within its normal range.

One reason for this is that these people sweat out salt, which otherwise contributes to kidney stone formation. People who work out tend to also drink more water, which also prevents stones from forming. The other surprising benefit of sweating is boosting our immune system to fight off germs and bacteria.  This because sweat contains an antimicrobial peptide which protects our body from infections and colds.

  • Keep an antiperspirant always in your bag. This is a general truth that almost all of us are aware of – whenever we feel that we’re becoming sweaty, antiperspirant for underarms is there to save our day.
  • Keep a handkerchief always with you.  This is valid for people who tend to sweat more on their neck and forehead.
  • Avoid spicy food, alcohol, and caffeine. They might trigger sweating, so it’s time to replace that Mexican dish you’re so fond of with something else.
