Woman Posts Unedited Picture To Reveal How She Overcame The Unhealthy Relationship With Body Image

Instagram has become a place where you’ll scroll through post after post of perfectly toned, smooth bodies without a smidge of imperfection. It can really play tricks on one’s self-esteem, especially if they are younger and easily affected.

They’ll start believing that’s how the female body should look, and any cellulite, stretch mark, or a softer part of the body is an imperfection and must be corrected at once. This leads to an unhealthy mindset, which sees women going on restrictive diets and heavy workouts to achieve the “perfect” body, which not even the models on those heavily edited pictures really have.

However, there are also people on Instagram who’ve made it a goal to share that you do not need to have a “perfect” body to be beautiful, hoping their tales of how they learned to embrace their “flaws” will inspire others to do the same. One of them is Ariella Nyssa, 21, from Sydney who shared how she learned to love her body she has after years of a toxic relationship with it.

Posting a picture of herself in a bikini, Ariella opened up about how the things she perceived as a physical imperfection would consume her so much that it left her “mentally and emotionally drained.”

“I would starve myself, I would constantly diet and I would HATE what my reflection entailed,” she wrote. “I finally realised that HATING what society deemed “unattractive” was pushing me further and further into a deep hole of depression, anxiety and misery.”

She questioned who decides what is and isn’t beautiful, adding, “Why should I live in fear of my body, one that is so unique and deserves to be loved,” before encouraging her followers to “believe in the power of loving your ‘flaws’.”

“At first it will feel so weird but TRUST ME,” the 21-year-old continued. “Once you start to appreciate and embrace those stretch marks, that cellulite, those lumps and bumps, that tub. Only then will you see how beautiful life can be. You will be unstoppable. An amazing force of LOVE!”

And Arielle isn’t new to posting about body positivity, having previously spoken on how she used to get bullied about the way her body is shaped. She shared that she had people call her cellulite “cottage cheese”, and her legs as “thunder thighs”.

But, she added, that ever since her teen years, she’s learned to eave negativity behind and come to accept herself as she is.

“Once you let go, you let go of the hurtful words that people try to place on your life. You can be FREE,” she wrote. “Learn to accept yourself so even if someone dislikes you or your body you DON’T give them any power.”
