Dark Circles Under The Eyes: Causes And Remedies

Dark circles are known to be a common issue among people. Most of us have struggled with them at some point, or are still struggling to get rid of them. In most cases, dark circles are not something we need to worry about a lot. One of the reasons people want to get rid of them is because they make them look tired. But we have all been there, and we can relate.

We have either had sleepless nights or times, or spent way too much time in front of the screens, be it a computer, tv, or cell phone. We can get eye strain from many things, and that can lead to those dark circles forming under our eyes. However, it’s true – there are still so many things you need to know concerning dark circles under the eyes because tiredness or eye strain are not the only causes.

But what exactly are dark circles under the eyes?

Known as periorbital dark circles, they tend to be a concern of not only elders but also young people. Periorbital is the tissue that surrounds the orbit of the eye. The reason why dark circles under the eyes become visible is because the thin layer of skin under the eyes shows the blood that is contained in the vessels more prominently than in any other part of the body. Meaning, the skin under or around the eyes is much thinner, 0.5 mm to be exact, than the skin in other parts of the body, 2 mm thick.

What causes dark circles under the eyes?

When dark circles are not hereditary, meaning passed from one generation to the other, there are also many other factors that may contribute to them, like:

Age

As mentioned, one of the factors that cause dark circles under the eyes is also age. The skin begins to lose its elasticity with the passage of years, and so we begin losing some of the fat and collagen under our eyes – this way dark circles under the eyes tend to become more prominent and visible.

Lack of sleep

Although controversial, lack of sleep is indeed one of the causes of dark circles under the eyes. It causes the blood vessels under the thin skin of the eyes to dilate and thus a darker tint is created.

Eye strain

When your eyes get tired by reading, watching TV, staring at the laptop screen – this is called eye strain. This, too, might cause the blood vessels around the eyes to enlarge leading to dark circles under the eyes.

Dehydration

When your body is not getting enough amount of water and hydration, the skin under your eyes begins to look dull. This tends to be due to their close proximity to the underlying bone.

Sun exposure

The melanin content gets increased when the skin is exposed to the sun a lot. Taking into consideration that the skin around the eyes is more sensitive than in other parts of the body, it also tends to pigment more.

Almond oil

Almond oil has many beneficial nutrients for the skin. When using almond oil to reduce dark circles, it’s better if you opt for the bedtime. Do this after having washed your face and without applying moisturizer. Simply apply almond oil on your fingertips, massage it under your eyes, and leave it overnight. Cucumber

One of the products you could also use to get rid of dark circles is the cucumber. It’s antioxidant-rich, containing cucurbitacins, orientin, isoscoparin, and vitexin, as well as vitamins C and K. One of the simplest ways you could use cucumbers in reducing dark circles is keep the cucumber in a refrigerator for about 30 minutes. Afterwards, cut two thin slices. Lie down in a comfortable position and place the slices on each eye. Replace them with freshly cut ones every minute or two and proceed like this for about 20 minutes, then wash it off with water. This should be done daily for two weeks.

You can also use the cucumber juice directly on your skin. Simply take one half of the cucumber and put it in a blender. You will get a water paste which you should take with your clean fingers and apply it in the area surrounding your eyes. Position yourself comfortably so the paste doesn’t drop and rinse it off with warm water after 20 minutes or so.
